This is the new studio space I will be working in this year with a few others. We have set up a not for profit comapny to lease the space under the company name 'Method and Manners'. I am buying potplants this week for my office/studio which is the three windows on the top right. Woop woop. Am setting up a wordpress site which will replace this blog soon maybe. Maybe not. I like this blog, but yes i will put a link up for it soon :)

Last weekend was my directors debut shooting a music video for NZ musician James Duncan. A longtime band member of SJD and Dimmer he released his solo album a month or so ago titled 'Hello-Fi' to much acclaim and press coverage blabla. Anyway his friends are making different videos for all the tracks and I volunteered to give it a go. We are editing it atm and should have it done end of next week? I storyboarded it first to ease the shoot and the editing.

NOTE: The crappy glasses are not script but help me feel bossy.

Here is a video made by film artist Sean Grattan who has recently left AKL for Cal arts. The track is 'My New Flumes' and features local artist Bacholorette, it is made almost entirley from stock footage and works quite well...Sean cameos in there pulling up some wierd caveman squat...

This Sat March 7th at the Marker Gallery, 159 Johnston St, Collingwood, from 6-9pm.
Come along and be the some of the first in the world to pick this up hot off the press.
Also the previous night is the opening of Ben Brown's exhibition at the same gallery so all his fabulous prints will be available for sale. We have co-ordinated these back to back openings/launch in association with Marker Gallery as Ben is one of the featured artists in this pioneer issue.

Leah Wellington...
It's true I don't mention it often but my whole family is great!
I have an older sister called Anna who is an amazing singer.
My younger brother and sister Joel and Leah who are twins took these beautiful shots below.
Leah's were just with a point and shoot and Joel's with a Ukrainian Kiev.
He has since hooked up the Rolls Royce Hasselblad and I have been sending him on location for the magazine.
Leah is co-director for Liberty gallery and all is going nicely.
Did I mention I have another two twin brothers?
They are only three so who knows what they will be!
Right now they are gorgeous.
My mum is a painter and my dad, well obviously he's a very busy man!!!

Joel last summer in Melbourne. Out the front of the Flemington house where we were brewing on Christmas day. The empty lot where we are riding is now under construction for an apartment lot. The projects are still there though...

New Zealand artist Sam Rulz or Ouch...
First met her when we worked together on an all female graffiti exhibition in Auckland at the Disruptive gallery.
She was living in Hamilton (Hamiltron city of the future/Hamtown)at the time.
She was sporting an impressive green mowhawk which was rather unusual for a graff artist I thought. These days she's pin-up perfection and working hard to make beautiful inky engravings. When I was back in AK she was at Stefan Sinclairs studio 'Two Hands' where I got my tatt fixed up.
Now she has joined 'the mainland' that is to say gone to Melbourne and is working at Green Lantern tattoo studio.
Her work is humorous and delicately accurate.

It's getting hot in here

It has reached 45.8degrees in the city of Melbourne today.

Shit is real.

Although we are due for what Australians refer to as a 'cool change' the implications of this heat wave point to one of the most serious challenges of our age; climate change...

The streets have been littered with dead leaves stirred by a hot wind for weeks now and residents have been pondering an early autumn.
The reality is far worse however. Hundreds of trees many of them senior, with ages well over a century are dying; due to the increase in heat.

The sky is gray despite the sunshine all over the state of Victoria as bush fires rage on in the outer suburbs.

Water restrictions are tight and one cannot avoid a guilty feeling when indulging in that second shower.

Close near by in the Pacific the nation of Tuvalu the rising sea level is sending the 11,000 inhabitants into panic. One island has already been engulfed by rising tides and with the general land mass not much over one meter above sea level relocation is necessary for survival.
Australia's Minister for Immigration, Mr Ruddock has said, "they will have to apply to come to Australia just like anyone else".
Despite Australia being arguably the most pollutant country in the Pacific.

'Help thy nieighbour' seems to be reserved for nostalgia and I am reminded of Mos Def's track 'New World Water' from the 1999 album 'Black on Both Sides'.
"You gotta cook with it bathe and clean with it, when it's hot summer time you fiend for it, it's what they dress wounds and treat diseases with, consumption provides health and easiness, the black and white rich and poor got need for it and everyone in the world can agree with it"
"You can laugh and take it as a joke if you wanna, but it don't rain for four weeks some summers"
"Fuck the bank I need a twenty year water tank"
Not sure if the first line is correct it's just from memory, but you get my point right.

Scarey thing is that was released ten years ago now.

Where your wheely bin?

37/365 days 2009 so far have been hectic.
As well as living in a different city getting by sleeping on the floor I have been working two day jobs, organizing an international exhibition (more on that soon) and moonlighting as arts editor for a new magazine coming out in March called 'The New Order'.

Here is a little about the magazine:

The New Order is a quarterly Arts, Fashion and Culture Magazine. Targeting the influencers who depict popular culture and lead the way in creating and developing arts and brand recognition. The New Order is a genuinely international magazine, curating content from all corners of the globe and distributing its fine quality publication all around the world.

Headed by Adam Bryce, the founder of one of the worlds biggest and best respected street culture websites, slamxhype.com. The New Order is run by a collective of talented and esteemed writers, photographers, editors and more. Alumni from the likes of i-D Magazine, Vogue, Interview, V Magazine, Purple and features regular contributions from some of the most highly regarded industry insiders and cultural icons.

The New Order's goal is to create The New Order, a new movement within the fashion and arts industries, a cultural bible for a new era.

I have had the great pleasure and privilege of interviewing some of the worlds top creatives and am anticipating a breakthrough premiere issue. I would love to tell you more but secrecy compliments genius in this matter.

Somehow I manage to socialize regardless of time restraints and the biggest heat wave Melbourne has seen since 1905.
Last weekend we all chilled at the infamous fountain park drinking longnecks under the moon and street light. Everyone here rides a bike (mainly track though) so I saw fit to swipe this crazy 'Predator' BMX from the Flemington house and join in...

This is Prior or Andrew Prior. I am staying with him and Chris for a while here in Melbourne in their loft. On Friday I drank too much to climb into the loft and fell. I think I cracked a rib. So on Saturday we took a drive to some rapids and soaked up the sunshine, country air and fresh water. We each had a single stubby which Prior referred to as 'Necklings'

It has been around 39 degrees for the last few days. Good beer drinking weather. Last night was spent sitting on a cricket pitch drinking Melbourne bitters in good company (my regards to Mister Thomas J). Even happened across the lovely Jack Jeweller at the Tram stop on Church St.
Saturday was spent walking back from a pass out party. We climbed through a hole in the fence of the graveyard, bikes and all. This effort was gratified by our time then spent at the shrine to Elvis listening to Katie Red and Dem Ho's.

Cassette 9 is a new bar in an old location. Where Papa Jacks used to be on Vulcan Lane in Auckland central. It opened successfully and packed to capacity on Friday with the Cheese on Toast Christmas shindig. Am trying to find images for ya'll that's one spot you can check my stuff in Auckland this week anyhoo...the nice people organizing it are also responsible for a place Sydney people will be familiar with...World Bar teapots anyone?

So finally opened last Thursday has really only been a month and a bit but a full and happy month so all is well.
I was painting right up until an hour before the opening.

But somehow the work was up

who are running this new venture Liberty gallery.
And I got dressed?

Johnny Edgell provoded a sweet soundtrack, 48 below the vodka and Il Buco the pizza.

There is a site after many years a few select pieces from an expanding fruitcake (ha Rene).
For those who are uninitiated Rene started as a skate photographer in the early 90's late eighties sorta buzz time and started to include portraits of the people involved and in the scene almost simultaneously. He has developed into both a respected commercial photographer but for what he is most passionate he is most appreciated capturing the whimsical at its most beautiful.

Kia ora cuz
Well I am visiting the whanau in AKL for a while and things are great. The birds sound like birds and not like dying babies like they do in Aussie. It is sunny and then rainy just like I remember it. The people are friendly and talented and the beer is cheap.
I am making work at my mums place in the suburbs peace and quiet are the key adjectives... and objectives if I think about it.
I will be having a solo exhibition here in late October and will start pushing out the press for that this week.
To sum it up I would recommend the video below...classic

While I am here in NZ I am staying some weekends with my sister at Cross St studios behind sunny Karangahape (K'Happy) Rd in Auckland. It is a pleasant space with a really great community vibe. I just wish I could take better pictures. On Saterday there was an amazing party where a band called the Lucky Dragons played. At one point there were a hundred or so people sitting cross legged on the floor listening and participating in their soundscape. Before the party we painted and cut out decorations there must have been at least ten of us setting up together and even more special everyone cleaned together the next day so it took no time.
I managed to get filthy drunk and make out a beautiful green eyed part Maori boy mmm lucky me!
My sister Leah Forsyth has an exhibition opening in the gallery space on the seventh of October called Dizygotic which I will write more on soon...

Well Sydney peops I have had my fill of you for a while. So I went to Melbourne for a week and got smashed. Lost my camera. Drank with the bike couriers by the fountain. Broke onto rooftops (see photo above)and hung out with some good good people. Found that Wu-tang tattoo on one of the Melbourne friends blogs http://theslamfactory.blogspot.com
so I am off again to NZ this time for the first time in close to two years. Where I will be doing a solo exhibition at a new gallery there called Liberty Gallery will stop being so lazy and be sure to post while I am away. X

I want another cookie

orange and almond cookies

Recipe as follows:
You will need
5 C plain flour (adjust as needed)
500g butter
tin of condensed milk
1 1/4 C castor sugar
drops of vanilla or essence
a large handful of almonds
and
the zest grated from two oranges and the juice of half of one
and icing sugar to ice

Melt butter mix in condensed milk and sugar and vanilla sift in flour and chop the almonds up as fine or chunky as you want them. Adjust the amount of flour till you have a good cookie texture.
Use a spoon to evenly make little balls and them squish em onto a greased baking tray with a fork. You should get sixty or so.
Bake on 270 in a preheated oven for approximately 12minutes (fifteen seemed over cooked and ten under).
cool on a rack or on a tea towel if that's all you got handy.
Use a teaspoon to pour on a spoon of icing on each cookie.
when set give away! Because if you eat them all you will feel a sugar high then you will feel sick and then fat and lonely it is better to eat the dough in solitude than the cookie

Started out nice drinking Tsingtao and eating Chinese at Superbowl on Sussex St to celebrate Katie's 21st. Then at her insistence it was off to see Kid Cudi play at the Spanish club. Drink prices were pricey so we hit up the alley and tried not to notice we were getting metal detected at the door. Was a good gig all in all to say the least to say more it was just a good night. Nice people small and 'intimate' like the flyer suggested.

Last Friday my friend Laura Taylor came over with Bonde Do Role which she is in. Which is kind of crazy. You know when you haven't seen someone for some years and then when you do they're in a famous band? Yeah well like that. Wierd. Met everyone out the front of this packed out gig which was the third they had played since landing in AUS that week
after touring the US. Everyone strolled in being on the door and all.
Except for me who forgot her ID of course. Had to get snuck in the back door HA!
Had an hour or so to kill with a couple of drinks and some catching up. The photos say all. Guess I should thank Jeff Yiu and Pete G for mean photos. I still can't use my camera. Spent most of the gig in the photo pit anyway as it had the best view. Tried to avoid getting dragged on stage by the vivacious Katie May. Went something like this...

(...apparently they normally get poeple out on stage as much as possible but the Forum has a barrier so it semi killed the crowd interaction...)

Was a frikken good night.
Killed it at the OAF back room where the door guy proved to be a door guy. As door guys and girls are.

Sunday just been.
I was struggling so I ate a sausage roll from a patisserie around the back. There was a lot to take in and alot of people to get around. My faves were (of course) Localism, Short mag, and my friend Robbie's paint you nails zine. Ooh ooh and burger zine on Dave Ladd's tablebut I said I wouldn't post it. Joe got some good pics and possibly a much better/less munntaloid description of the days events HERE

Will 'Grohl' Harden: Internal Workout Volume IV

So if you don't know, now you know....
Got the chance to interview the young Grohl while he was cleaning up in preparation for his opening preview last Wednesday. Here's what he had to say.

Forsyth: So tell me to start out how old are you?
Grohl:1984, so that would make me 23 years old.
F: OK, and what sort of education/background do you come from arts wise?
G:Well I got half way through my Bachelor of Visual arts and Design which is more or less two years in but am not going to finish it, ah a two year residency at China Heights and I guess you could say I was unofficially mentored there by Paul davies.
F: Right and what shows have you done in the past, solo shows? I know there ahve been a few right?
G: So far there has been 'L.A Grohl' at the Heights, 'RIMP' and '20 Mangs' both of which were also at the Heights. And now 'Internal Workout Volume IV'.
F: and what exactly is a "RIMP"?
G: exactly...
F: and "Internal Workout"?
G: really I guess it's a play on words. You know like 80's workout videos; but also the energy and output involved in making the works.
F: How would you say this latest show differs from your previous exhibitions?
G: More confident, I have stopped using the black outlines and am shifting away from that lo-brow look. Also I have started using oil paints
F: what other mediums are you using in your works?
G: I tend to start with water colours/gouache, and then I go in with a mix of inks/acrylics and oils. Also I am mostly working on paper at the moment.

F: Could you tell me a bit more about the process you use when making these works?
G: basically I am experimenting with materials, you could say the effect is like psychedelic coloured swirls. I generally work on a piece until it's about 70% finished, when I have ten or so at this stage I will work on them until competition to increase continuity in the works. The general theme I guess is other worldly, like walking into an animation. This exhibition for example is an exhibition with its own culture and customs.
F: and you generally stay up quite late to get this all done?
G: yeah usually till about 4 in the am.
F:So what artists are you into/who inspires your work?
G: Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), an artists from the early 1900's called Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schultz or Wols for short. Also the work of Cecily Brown and Francis Bacon.
F: I have noticed alot of sandwiches in your daily diet; how many would you say you eat on average?
G: I'm on a strict meat pie and noddle diet at the moment actually. There's been no Chicken sambos for a while.
F: So whats in for the future?
G: Hopefully another show towards the end of the year and some travelling...

Well for those of you have known me for a while will of course know the infamous Regan Tate. We caught up at the Blue Bar in Prahran for a couple of drinks. Good times. Quick update would be this:
He still knows all the best new stuff, still DJ's vinyl, still has fresh kicks (despite claims he's quit the habit), and is doing bits and bobs for Slam including interviewing some interesting cats from Stonesthrow but that you will just have to wait for...

Also got the chance to checks out the Slumps when I was down. The current exhibit was Brendan Huntley here is a bit about his work fromthe Utopian Slumps site:

"After studying a BA in Fine Art (Sculpture) at the Victorian College of the Arts Brendan has exhibited across such spaces as the Carlton Hotel, China Heights and Someday Gallery. When out of his studio, Huntley spends his time fronting garage rock band Eddy Current Suppression Ring. He also manages four Weet-Bix a day, sometimes five if the mood takes him.

In Order of Appearance presents an exploration of the human psyche from artist Brendan Huntley. Through sculptural and two-dimensional form, multiple personalities are evoked and the facade of the everyday revealed. Brendan's works are concerned with the beauty of the mundane, dealing with ordinary things like teapots, perceptions, ideals, jugs, fame, music, jars, worship, ski masks, lipstick, hair gel, hair dye, balaclavas, foundation, pornographic magazines, plastic surgery, brand new shoes, birth, kicking goals, claustrophobia, gingivitis, cancer, vitamin C, reproduction, age, varicose veins, bow ties, business suits, denim jeans, skirts with pleats, high heels, career, work, emotions, death, promotions, faces, beards, baldness, personalities, race, replicas, creation, wrinkles, hammers, humans, weapons of mass destruction, transplants, earth, terror, man walking on the moon, flags, fraud, aliens, vessels. "The Drawing Machine" Group show at the Greenwood gallery in Melbourne

Well this post has been a long time coming but here you go. Was down in Melb's because I was homeless for a week or so and there was nothing really else for it.
Got picked up by the loveable Prior and taken to my sisters house where she lives with forementioned Prior and the lovely Christopher.
The first night down there was a massive group show opening at the Greenwood gallery in South Melbourne. It was frikken cold but we got the tram and checked it out anyways. Ran into Ben Frost and Reka as well as some other surprising characters.
Here are some pics, but note:People thought I was a pro with this camera I got at the mo so I was allowed free reign.
Aaaah I love other peoples cities...

Aucklanders should recognise James James from ye olde K of Rd above...

There were 17 artists involved in the exhibition all of whom contributed to the large installation in the centre of the gallery as well as exhibiting their own bodies of work. I wish I had more pics there was a lot to cover.
Ghostpatrol and Miso curated the show and put together the following artists:

Well after a late night on Friday (see previous post) it seemed like a good idea to book flights to melbourne at three in the morning and then leave at midday.

But last Friday was my boy Andy's exhibition of his 'Cuprock' if you live in Sydney and are outside at all you are bound to have seen one of his many pieces around created from diamond wire fences and plastic cups systematically placed one by one individually to create a whole.

Don't Panic caught up with Erin Forsyth, to get the 411 behind her artwork.

Erin what is your background?
Originally from Aukland New Zealand, I ran a shop there called ‘Creep’ where we sold aerosol paints and sneakers.

Have you had any artistic education?
I dropped out of Animation and Fine Art school and moved into street stuff in 1999 that taught me a lot! I learn from my friends everyday though without fail.

How would you describe your art?
A kiss on the cheek and a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Can you describe your process of creating a new piece?
I begin with an initial character and build from there to a social level (e.g. who the character is with, the what and why to the viewer). So the information you are given is usually the equivalent to what you might know if you randomly met someone by accident at a strange time in their lives and didn’t know anything else about them.

What inspires your aesthetic in the everyday life?
Hip-hop lyrics, 1960’s aestheticism, grey marle, bohemia, gypsies, the degenerate, the forgotten, the outcast, drifters, rooftops, alleys, the attic, under the stairs.

What do you love most about living in Sydney?
My friends and my village - Slurry Hills street team.

Any recurrent topics or matters you work on?
Undercurrents of faith and destruction and how these affect us.

What are you really excited about right now?
Leah’s Jellyfish, Thomas Jeppe’s work ethic, lingerie and
t-shirts, Richard Coleman, Steve Spacek, recipes, fast men, quiet at-home types, walking alone at night.

Work-wise, my solo show ‘HEX’ which opens at Black and Blue Gallery on Cleveland Street, Sydney on March 13th. Also Ariel’s group show ‘Because We Can’ coming up in April.

My sister Leah and I are working on a side project called the ‘Nautical Journals’ (see www.erinforsyth.blogspot.com for updates)

What would you be doing if you were not an artist?
Sleeping? Maybe I’d be an author. A cross between Miranda July and Charles Bukowski.

So for those of you who didn't know my brother Joel (in photo) is the bike man. I found this old BMX frame on the side of the road last year and he is helping me do it up. Check it out that's a solid alloy back wheel A MAZE Ing looking foward to riding this beast around Sydneyside. I am going to keep it black and yella. Nice school bus yella too. Autosol on the wheel. Yeah! The seat post came up chrome when I stripped it back too. Gangsta

Somdays gallery in association with Sabotaz are proud to present “Illness” a collection of new works from artist Erin Forsyth.

Produced during and inspired by her past eight months of residence in Sydney, “Illness” is part whimsical folk, part social commentary with Forsyth combining notes on scene culture, quarter life crises and the mundane with visual interests in Heironymous Bosch, children’s book illustration and religious iconography to create works that are charmingly detailed in appearance and slightly unsettling in tone.

Working across aerosol and acrylic painting, pencil illustration and large scale sculpture, Erin aims with “illness” to draw in and involve, with the hope that the audience find familiarity in the situations and empathy for the characters- perhaps recognizing in them, their own modern ills.

Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Erin Forsyth has over the past eight years established herself as a prominent figure in the city’s street art scene; not only through her respected graf work but as the owner of store “creep”- a former K’rd institution that supplied like- minded peers with imported aerosol, rare sneakers and a locale in which to hang out and swap ideas.

Having first exhibited with NZ’s “rise and shine” collective, Erin’s work has since exhibited at the influential Michael Lett and Disruptive galleries aswell as commissions for various magazines, website “slamxhype”and advertising agencies DDB and Lowe.

“Illness”is her first solo exhibition in Sydney.

How I chill from 1981-Until (life story)

I was the daughter of a church pastor. My great grandmother was believed to practice witchcraft.
We travelled and sang on the street, we were involved in spiritual warfare (think the exorcist) I was not allowed to watch TV or listen to non-Christian music until I was twelve public school education at an all girl school. I don't know why I mention this but it seems important.
Here is a vague outline of projects and stuff I've done...

1998
Moved in with Doug Fresh, Dave Wood and Matt Crawley and some randoms. Was working for a night club called the Mininstry I was eighteen the drinking age was twenty.

In 1999 I went to a freehand animation school. I met a lot of great artists there like Elliot Stewart and Tim Malloy the place was rife with street artists and creative people. I started to take spray painting a bit more seriously then and did my first piece that year. Tried to go to art school the next year but it didn't sit well. Was living downtown at Emily Place in the Offset print building with Rose Hardy who started her tattoo apprenticeship that year.

2001 I did a lot of tagging.
Think I worked in a coffee shop, I normally do.

That was 2000 was in my first exhibition which was a group show at the ASA gallery in Auckland organized by creative team 'Rise and Shine' and the lovely Morgan Hammond.

2002
met Gasp and the other R.F.Cs who I started getting more into street stuff with I kept doing fine art stuff, group shows and commissions too.

2003
I opened 'Out Of Order' a really small space which I sublet off my friends Tieneke and Katalina who ran a store called Nu'vo. This was upstairs on Karangahape Rd. It was not really open proper hours just kind of whenever I was there. We sold nozzles, pens, stickers and other graff crap some t-shirts that Micheal Mac Namara made. We started taking orders for Montana spray paint than Ray would drop it off for us to sell. This was when Auckland was dry and you couldn't buy Montana, Belton or any of the other specialty graff paints anywhere. Ray used to drive around to peoples houses to drop off paint.
I moved into 155 K'Rd that year which was basically next door and people could come buzz me and I would go down and sell them stuff. Other than that I think I was just on the Doll?
We did an opening exhibition at 4.20 which featured Matt Dowman, Elliot Francis Stewart, Roberta Stewart, Gasp, Jillski, Kate Newby, Pear, Slope, User, Vino, myself and performances from Doug Fresh and the Imsomniacs (Tourettes, Breakin Wreckwords etc.).
I had my first solo exhibition that year 'I Can't Believe Its Not Rabbit' at the spiral gallery on Queen St. This consisted of over fifty hand made soft toys and some illustration. I am trying to get hold of the TV interview from Flipside if anyone knows how to get it.
Also that year was 'Project Unity' which was at the Micheal Lett gallery. We got to design hoody and t prints for NZ label Huffer which were made in lmtd runs and then sold at local store MAW. Other than me there was matt Dowman, Chantelle Simone, Seung Yul Oh, Arlo Edwards and Mephisto Jones; flyer by Rush.

2004
Got a grant. Reopened Out Of Order as 'Creep' with the funding. Started selling sneakers sale on return for customers, started stocking Belton, Montana, Krylon and some other stuff. Displayed artwork instore.
Organized a Nike exhibition at the then recently opened Disruptiv gallery which was called the force.
Customed stuff for Sneaker Pimps and Converse exhibits that were on that year.
Painted at the Rising Sun with Brett Chan as part of a release thingy for a Sugarlicks CD.
Did commissions for LOWE advertising, Cellar Door and some others. Took part in Forging alliances group show in New Plymouth and the Hip Hop Summit exhibition at the town hall.

2005
Did lots of commissions.
Started doing a bit of freelance marketing consulting on how to appeal to the youth and organize customer databases, walk in sheets, marketing calenders etc. which I had picked up a bit of info from my sel directed study and writing business plans/running my own business.
Had a group soft sculpture show at the 'Whisper Whisper' gallery where we built a cardboard forest inside the gallery.
This was with Sam Whetton, Charles Cumming, Kenneth Merrick, James Healy, Ai Shimizu and Cameron McKean. Kenneth and Cameron made a soundscape for it and james did some video.
Got robbed late in the year. Shut the shop couldn't be ****d was broke and we never caught whoever I am very bored of relaying this story.

2006
Helped Samantha Whetton to put on the first 'Craftwerk' in AKL.
Did stuff for The Loft, Catalytic Attack, Adam Custins, Style magazine.
Moved to Sydney.
Painted at the Record Store in part of some live thing as an after party for the release of some graff film.
Ended up in the same flat in Emily Place.

2007
Did a couple of commissions. Had a solo show 'Illness'. Was in the end of year group show at Monster Children. Painted the group mural for Capital L. Featured work in we are the image makers.

2008
